  • Carnoustie Championship – The Championship Course has hosted seven Open Championships, one Ladies Open and one Seniors Open making it one of the very few to have done so in the UK. Generally regarded as the toughest of the Open venues for those who understand the game a little more will know it is probably the fairest too.
  • Panmure – There is a gentle beginning before Panmure opens up beyond the Pine Forest. Heather and hillocks present the same challenge as the more traditional sand dunes.
  • Monifieth Medal – This course has recently undergone a 3 year recovery programme and is in excellent condition with well grassed narrow running fairways, lush semi-rough, penal heavy rough and fast consistent greens not to mention the deep revetted bunkers to test any standard of golfer.
  • Montrose Medal – This is a traditional Scottish links course featuring in the Top 100 Courses in the World and is the 5th oldest in the world – celebrating its 450th anniversary in 2012.

Blairgowrie Teams Up With Ballathie

ONE of the UK’s top inland golf courses has paired-up with a hotel for the first time to attract more visitors to Perthshire.

Perth and Kinross Council has helped fund the partnership between Blairgowrie Golf Club and the four star Ballathie Country House Hotel at Kinclaven.

Blairgowrie, which has three highly rated courses, including one on which Aussie star Greg Norman posted his first European tour victory, and multi award-winning Ballathie are marketing joint packages, referring customers to each other and have launched a joint website (www.perthshire-golf-breaks.co.uk).

“This is a splendid collaboration between two of Perthshire’s flagship organisations. We are keen to see operators like these working together,” said Fraser McGowan of Perth and Kinross Council’s Business Growth team.

Douglas Cleeton, managing secretary of Blairgowrie Golf Club, added: “We are offered links with hotels all the time but resisted them until now. Our partnership with Ballathie will challenge the best resorts in the UK. It offers stays at a top class hotel in the heart of Perthshire as well as the opportunity to visit many five star attractions including world famous palaces and castles.”

Norman won his first European tour event on the Rosemount course in 1977 and the Landsdowne course has hosted major Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) events.

Ballathie owner John Milligan, recently elected captain of Prestwick Golf Club where the first 11 British Open Championships were held, commented: “Our guests are often looking for a variety of activities to do in and around Perthshire. This arrangement allows us to compete with any other golf resort in the UK at attractive rates.”

Blairgowrie will host the Ballathie Mixed Open from 14-16 October. Couples will play nine holes over the ‘Wee Course’ on the Sunday and have dinner at the hotel. On the Monday they will play 18 holes over Rosemount followed by dinner at the club, and on the Tuesday play 18 holes over Landsdowne with a prizegiving in the evening. For details call the club on 01250-872622 or the hotel on 01250-883268.
